Deciding which systems to protect first

When an IT system goes down, some teams barely notice and others stop. This company needed to know which was which before deciding where to invest in recovery.

What was delivered
A weighted scoring model and an interactive dashboard
Result
IT set its recovery priorities, starting with the 12 most critical services

Prior experience: done as part of a management consulting team, before Periscale.

The challenge

When everything is critical, nothing is.

Each system owner rated their own system, so the ratings couldn’t be compared and there was no clear way to decide where recovery money should go first.

Thinking differently

Make the scores comparable, then visible.

The team worked with 50+ people across the business, and every service owner answered the same question: what happens if this is down for four hours? Answers were scored across five weighted areas, including financial and safety impact, and shown side by side in one dashboard.

An extraordinary result

A ranked list IT could act on.

The rankings surprised people. The CIO and leadership held each service owner to their scores, and some scores took negotiation to settle. The dashboard sorts every service into four priority levels and opens any one to show its scores and the answers behind them.

Priority overview

How many services sit at each level, by business group.

Comparable scores

Every service measured against the same thresholds.

Impact by area

Financial, operational, regulatory, safety and reputation.

Service detail

The scores, owners and answers behind any service.

How it scaled

Priorities that carry into recovery planning.

The rankings now guide disaster recovery plans, support agreements and where to invest in resilience.

Your next step

Is everything marked critical?

We can rank your systems or projects by what they’re worth to the business, and give leaders a dashboard to test the trade-offs.
