One map of how transmission projects get built

A large electric utility’s documentation of how transmission projects get built hadn’t been updated since 2021. Teams, roles and processes had all changed since.

Prior experience: done as part of a management consulting team, before Periscale.

The challenge

The org chart changed. The documents didn’t.

The lifecycle documentation dated from 2021. Teams had been reorganized and processes had evolved since. New people struggled to learn their roles, ownership was blurry, and few could see how their work running late held up the next team.

Thinking differently

Write down today first.

Directors often wanted to jump ahead to how the work should run. We held the line: first, capture how it actually runs today, with the people who do it. Every activity went through working sessions with the people who perform it, follow-up reviews, a manager sign-off and a director review. Over a year, 118 people across 19 groups, from project management to engineering to construction, came onto one shared picture.

An extraordinary result

One shared picture of the work.

Every activity, from early planning through engineering and construction to switching the line on, now has an up-to-date document, a clear owner and approver, and a process flow.

Used every week

Project management teams work from the documents in their weekly meetings, with team members walking through their part of the work.

Clear ownership

Every activity shows who does it, who approves it and who needs to know.

Clear handoffs

Teams see how their work, on time or late, affects the next team’s.

A foundation for onboarding

New people can learn a role from the documents instead of by asking around.

How it scaled

Built to be refreshed.

A searchable library of the documents, a visual index and a guide to keeping it current make the next update straightforward, and the client chose to keep refreshing it.

Your next step

Not sure who owns what after a change?

We can map your process end to end with the people who do the work, so every team sees its part and new people can learn a role from the page.

More work.
